HOMEWORK POLICY

The staff at Abu Dhabi Grammar School supports the assigning of homework as a means of reinforcing and furthering classroom instruction and learning. Each course has different homework demands and expectations for students. These statements summarize the reasons for the necessity and importance of homework in assisting a student's educational progress at AGS.

Homework is given because it ….

    • reinforces material presented in the classroom
    • supplements and builds on classroom experience
    • creates readiness for learning by providing background knowledge
    • provides practice drill in specific skills areas
    • provides follow-up to classroom activities
    • provides students with activities for individualized learning
    • is an evaluative tool

Student's Role
Students are expected to complete homework assignments on time in order to develop self-discipline and time management skills and to enhance their knowledge of each subject.

Teacher's Role
Teachers are expected to evaluate homework promptly and to assign meaningful homework that will be evaluated using a variety of techniques.

Parent's Role
Parents are expected to provide students with an environment that promotes good study habits and to enrich the students' learning through their support and encouragement. Parents have an opportunity to be informed about the materials students are studying by direct contact with the teacher. Every student is expected to use a diary to maintain an accurate and ongoing record of tests and assignments. Major essays and assignments are given well in advance and students are encouraged not to leave them to the last minute.

The standard guideline for daily homework is:

Grade 1 and 2 10 minutes
Grade 3 to 6 20 to 45 minutes
Grade 7 to 8 1 to 1 ½ hour
Grade 9 and 10 students 1.5 to 2 hours
Grade 11 and 12 students. 2.5 to 3 hours
