ATTENDANCE
and LATE POLICY
|
Being
on time for class and attendance in each class is expected at the Abu
Dhabi Grammar school. Students attending AGS must assume responsibility
for attendance in all courses in which they are registered. A student
who fails to attend a class is assumed to be absent. Parents or guardians
are expected to excuse each absence from class. Parents should call
the school (020 6662 900) to excuse a student or send a written excuse
immediately upon the student's return to school. Notes should be passed
in to the administration office and not to the teachers.
The following are the procedures to follow when a student misses a class
and the consequences when missed classes are not excused for legitimate
reasons.
- Teachers will
keep a record of attendance and the parents of those students who have
an unusually high number of absences will be informed on a regular basis.
- At 10 absences
in a course, the School Administrator will discuss the issue with the
student and every effort will be made to contact the parent.
- More than 20 absences
missed in any course, without a medical or similar excuse for each class
over 20, will result in a loss of credit in the course.
- Absences for
each term must be cleared up prior to the beginning of the examinations
in each term. Students will not be eligible to write exams if they have
unexcused absences greater than 20.
- Truancy or skipping
classes may result in suspension from school. The first time this happens,
the administration may require a meeting with the parents before the
student returns to class.
- Students arriving
late for school are required to sign in at the back gate as they enter
the school premises. They will receive an admit-to-class slip and they
are to go immediately to class.
- Teachers will
not admit anyone to class during the first period who arrives late unless
they have an admit slip.
- Students arriving
late are also responsible to check with the teacher at the end of the
class to make sure they have not been recorded as absent.
- Each teacher
will develop a late policy for their classes and they will determine
when the late issue has become a discipline matter. The teacher will
inform the administrator of their policy and the administrator will
deal with the student as a person who is interrupting the learning process
and has created a discipline issue.
At
AGS we believe that in order to get the best possible learning experience
students must be in class and therefore we see attendance as the key
to that experience. In order to receive a credit for a course, a student
must have 110 hours of classroom instruction. It is essential that students
take advantage of their classroom opportunities to get the maximum instructional
time.
Early Dismissal from School
Students may be permitted to leave the school grounds during the school
day only if they have prior permission in writing from parents and the
approval of the administrator. Parents will either pick-up the students
or give permission in the note that they can leave and take an alternate
form of transportation.
Student Illness
If a student becomes ill during the day, the student is required to
report to the office. The Office Assistant will contact the appropriate
parent to indicate the nature of the student's discomfort. Arrangements
will be made to ensure the student's safe return either to home or the
classroom.
Holiday/Extended Absences
On occasion, parents choose to remove their child(ren) for an extended
period of time in order to go on holiday or participate in other activities
outside the regularly scheduled school breaks. The following guidelines
may help in making such a decision:
-
Parents
are requested to consult with the administrator prior to making plans.
-
Parents
are then responsible for advising the administrator in writing of
the dates of any departure and return to school at least two weeks
before departure. All of the student's course teachers will be informed
of the absence.
-
The
student is responsible for any missed work, collection of handouts,
notes and reading assignments. The student must see his/her teachers
to see if arrangements can be made regarding missed tests, labs, projects,
presentations or performances.
-
A
student's mark may be adversely affected by a prolonged absence.
-
Examinations
will not be rescheduled to accommodate a student's holiday.
- Parents are asked
to consult the School Year Calendar for examination and school holiday
dates.
Absence during Examinations
Students are expected to be in attendance when writing exams. If a student
does not write an exam, he/she will be subject to the loss of the exam
grade and, in some cases, may be risking the credit for that course. If
the absence is due to health reasons, the student must present a medical
certificate in order to complete a make-up examination. Permission will
not be given to write final exams prior to the designated exam dates and
schedules. Parents are asked not to plan holidays until after the final
date for exams.
